In his short lifetime Schubert composed over 1000 works: 600 lieder, 9 symphonies, several chamber music works, masses and overtures. He composed 15 string quartets, but only this one string quintet, known as the “Cello Quintet” because it has two cellos. The quintet was published in 1853, three years after it was first performed.
