We are immensely proud of our cooperation with Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter, the composer Frode Fjellheim and soloists Adrian Angelico and Ulla Pirttijärvi-Länsman for this celebration, over 20 years after Valkeapää’s death.
Valkeapää was one of the greatest ambassadors for the Sami language, Sami art and Sami culture. He called himself Áillohaš for a period of his life, and he composed music, joiked, wrote poems, a play for the theatre, sketched, and painted. One of his characteristics was that all this often created a whole.
In this performance you will hear new music by Frode Fjellheim, inspired by Valkeapää, poems by Valkeapää himself, performed by actors from Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter and we will introduce you to his visual art. With these poems he won the Nordic Council Literature Prize.
Nils-Aslak Valkeapää made people interested in Sami culture and art, at a time when it was close to dying out. He made it a lot more fashionable, and it is still extremely popular today.
