The Arctic Philharmonic is an expanding orchestra. Today, the group of musicians in Tromsø is a Chamber Orchestra of 21 musicians where Henning Kraggerud is Artistic Director. A significant part of productions are co-productions together with the group of musicians residing in Bodø. The section leader viola  alternates with the other section leaders on viola residing in Tromsø/Bodø. A typical season covers a broad range of repertoire, including chamber music, contemporary music, symphonic repertoire, ballet and opera. Read more about the Arctic Philharmonic’s structure HERE.

Audition:
1st round of the audition is held through video.
Selected candidates will be invited to the round 2+3 of the audition.
Audition (by invitation): 30th and 31st of May 2023 in Tromsø.

Repertoire and video:
1st round (video):
1) Stamitz or Hoffmeister 1. mov. (with kadenz), preferably with piano accompaniment.
2) Excerpts:
– Beethoven: Symf. no 5, 2. mov. (1 excerpt)
– Prokofiev: Classical Symf. 1. mov. (6 excerpts)
3) 3 min. piece of your own choice or excerpt from a piece.  

You are to make 3 video files, where the orchestra excerpts are gathered in one file. There are no technical demands to the video, but please attempt to get as high quality as possible, make the video in a well-lit room with proper sound/volume. The whole of you, as well as the whole instrument, should be visible in the picture. Use YouTube, to secure that all videos are on the same platform. The videos are uploaded to YouTube as “unlisted”, and links to YouTube are to be attatched in your application. Remember to specity which piece you choose as your chosen piece.
The repertoire from round 1 will not be repeated in round 2+3 in Tromsø in May.

2nd and 3rd round (by invitation):
1st movement from Bartok Viola Concerto, Walton Viola Concerto or Hindemith Schwanendreher.

Chamber Music:
– Mozart: Quartet KV458 The Hunt, 1st mvt (1 excerpt, start until repetition)
– Dvorak: Piano Quintet op. 81 (2 excerpts)

Orchestral excerpts:
– Mendelssohn: Midsummernight’s Dream (1 excerpt)
– Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet (1 excerpt)
– Berio: Folk Songs (1 excerpt)
– Brahms: Symphony 4 (1 excerpt)
– Schönberg: Verklärte Nacht (4 excerpts)

Candidates that reach the final round of the audition will be offered reimbursements for travel costs up to a total of NOK 2500,- on presentation of receipts.

Finalists should anticipate to play some weeks in the orchestra as a part of an extended audition (remunerated as freelance commission).
